The "Focus on the Creek" project at Concrete Coyote Community Park aimed to enhance Lower Shooks Run Creek's ecological health, improve safety along the Legacy Loop Trail, and foster community pride through mural, educational programs, a science kiosk, a youth summer camp, and volunteer opportunities.
The mural is a compilation of 10 sign board panels, each painted by a different artist/group of artists and installed under the historic stone bridge. These panels illustrate various aspects of the local community, highlighting whatever is important to that artist/group of artists and inviting in diverse perspectives and stories. Combined, they tell an illustrative and bright collective story of the multitudes of Colorado Springs.
The art-making was both the entry-point for participants, a chance for creative self-expression and collaboration, a point of pride and success as a publicly installed mural, an homage to the local history and ecology, and a reason to return and care for the area into the future. This project combined the arts with nature and science to benefit both our community and ecosystem for the better.
This project was funded by Arts in Society Colorado Art Grant and Draper Commons.
