SUMMER COMMUNITY ART and MURAL PROGRAM (“SCAMP”), 2012
Facilitated by Concrete Couch in conjunction with the City Of Colorado Springs
Concept: CC will run a series of public art projects in the downtown area. These programs will be free and open to community participation. CS will coordinate and advertise each project in the neighborhood, and will help obtain any needed permits, and coordinate with municipal and area groups. CC will facilitate the actual projects, and obtain materials.
Product: We will create murals, a bench, and a circus-style performance.
The murals will be painted and ceramic tile mosaic: the art bench will be concrete, ceramic and stone.
Business Sponsorship: CC and CS will seek out business sponsors to fund the program.
Sponsors will be recognized in a modest way directly on each project, as well as through the media and CC newsletter. The Colorado Springs Independent will advertise and highlight each project.
Program Flow: We will run each program for a week straight, meeting every day, for several hours a day. After most projects we will take a week off. During the “off” week, CS will advertise the next project and CC will meet with teachers, neighborhood sponsors, prospective helpers, and gather materials. (Note: the Circus Camp week will directly follow the Uintah Street creek-path project.)
Schedule:
Each project will meet 9am to noon each day.
May 21 thru 25: City Rock Climbing Gym: art bench (Nevada Ave. downtown).
June 4 thru 8: Century Link Downtown; mosaic bench.
June 18 thru 22: Mid Shooks Run – Willamette Wall; mural with Community Prep School.
July 2 thru 6: South Shooks Run – mosaic & painting & light construction work (E. Fountain Blvd.).
July 16 thru 20: Pikes Peak Ave. Bridge; mural (Shooks Run Trail near the Gazette building).
July 30 thru August 3: Uintah Bridge; mural and faux painting with CS Therapeutic Recreation Program (Fountain Creek Trail by Colorado College)
August 6 thru 10: Circus Camp; (Patty Jewett Neighborhood near Dogtooth Café) Performance: Aug. 11
August 20 thru 24: MYSTERY PROJECT (TBA)
Budget: We estimate each project will cost $2000, including planning, facilitation, materials, insurance, advertising, documentation and food. Therefore 8 projects would cost $16,000. We are seeking financial contributors for each project. We have raised about $4000 so far.
The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is sponsoring SCAMP with donations of materials.
Interested sponsors are encouraged to contact CC.
